The Cube
The Cube, also known as the Cube Microplex, is a volunteer-run cinema and events venue on Dove Street South, near King Square in Bristol (BS2 8NQ). Wikipedia says the building was put up in 1916 as workshops for the Bristol Deaf Centre, converted by volunteers into a theatre with an auditorium and fly tower in 1964, and given a projection room and screen in the 1970s. The Cube opened in its present form in October 1998.
A 2001 fire next door cut off its public entrance, and it reopened in August 2002 with the entrance moved to Dove Street South. In December 2013 a fundraising campaign reached its £185,000 target to buy the freehold, and since April 2014 the building has been owned by Microplex Holdings, a non-profit community land trust. Wikipedia describes the venue as entirely staffed by volunteers, with an auditorium of about 108 seats and more than 350 public events a year, from films to music, comedy and movieoke.
