The Lanes is a spacious, multi-purpose venue on Nelson Street, a stone's throw from Rough Trade and Strange Brew. It combines bowling, karaoke, pool, club nights, live bands and a late-night diner, home of Ray's Pizza, with the Rock & Bowl hostel upstairs.

With Bristol promoters Gravy Train and BLG, it hosts weekly free-entry gigs showcasing rising indie and alternative artists from the UK and abroad.

Club nights are a staple. Regulars include emo and pop punk night Fat Lip, Motown celebration Motorcity and the Late Night Funk Club. Long-running Wasteman Weeklies is also on the listings, along with rock and metal night Phuct and 90s and 00s dance classics night Sandstorm.

It is an easy, unpretentious night out: bowl a few frames, grab a slice and then head to the dancefloor.

This week Phuct runs on 23 October and Sandstorm on 24 October. Fat Lip's Survival Horror Halloween party and a Wasteman Weeklies Halloween special follow.

Programme notes from this snapshot

Phuct, Fri 23 Oct; Sandstorm 90s & 00s, Sat 24 Oct.
